School Curriculum
Sinai College will provide children with sequential learning experiences, which will develop their abilities in all curricular areas. Sinai College uses a thematic, Integrated Unit approach. Additional programs include our Jewish Studies Program, Hebrew, Sports and Health and Values. The school follows the Queensland Studies Authority’s approved curriculum in the areas of:
- Mathematics
- English
- Studies of Society and Environment
- Science
- Health and Physical Education
- The Arts
- Technology
Jewish Studies
Jewish Studies entails the teaching of Torah (Five Books of Moses), Chagim (Jewish Festivals), Halacha (Jewish Law and customs) and ethics. These subjects cover the history of the Jewish people, the Jewish way of life, and the meaning behind the practices of Judaism and prayer.
Throughout the year we follow the Jewish calendar through special celebrations and events, bringing the whole school alive and providing students with the experience of living Judaism. These events include Purim celebrations, Model Seder for Pesach (Passover), Holocaust Memorial Day, building a Succah (booth) for the festival of Succot (Tabernacles), Lag B’Omer and so on.
Hebrew
The Hebrew program (LOTE) offers students at Sinai College instruction in Hebrew three times a week. By year seven, students have a good level of Hebrew in both written and oral expression. Hebrew is a compulsory school subject.
Information Technology
I.T. is valued and respected as a vital part of the children’s education. Some features of our IT program include:
- Networked computers in all classes
- A dedicated computer lab
- Children have access to a wide variety of applications/programs under teacher supervision
- ICT is incorporated into our Units of Inquiry wherever possible and practical.
Music
Ms. Newlands takes each class for one 45 minute music lesson each week. We also have a 45 minute school choir session once per week. Music is incorporated into our Thematic Units wherever possible. Additionally, children have the opportunity to take part in our wind instrument tuition program. This program runs at lunchtime and currently includes flute and recorder.
Sports & PE
Wednesday afternoons from 2:00pm to 3:00pm is compulsory sports at Sinai College. Swimming, tennis, basketball, athletics, gymnastics, rock climbing, golf, badminton and cycling are common sports activities that are taught during this time by qualified instructors. In addition, each class will conduct at least one 45 minute PE period each week. Sinai College hosts an Athletics Carnival in Term 3 and a Swimming Carnival in Term 4 of each year.
Sinai has partnered with Mt Petrie State School in order to field Senior and Junior soccer teams in Inter-School soccer competitions.
Health and Values Program
Our Health and Values Program introduces and develops the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that will assist students to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. Students will consider what it means to be healthy – physically, socially, mentally and emotionally – and will be given experiences to assist them to become responsible, caring members of society.
